Basic Drone F#
Horn Tone G#
Length 127cm
Mouth 3cm
Base End 9cm

This yidaki is a big surprise in a small package. It's a very clear, crisp, and powerful sound, suitable for Yirritja manikay (songs from a certain half of Yolngu culture). The flared shape gives some extra boom and bass response to the small instrument. The horn tone is easy to achieve and well balanced with the drone.

We often have Yolngu come to the art centre to get yidaki for ceremony, but it is rare that we get a yidaki after it has been used in ceremony! This instrument by Wangurri clan (Yirritja moiety) craftsman Mirrwatnga was used in a funeral ceremony at the Wangurri homeland of Dhalinybuy. This is not a special ceremonial type of didjeridu, but an everyday instrument that has the distinction of being chosen by Yolngu to be used to play songs in a ritual context. So if you want to learn what Yolngu (particularly Yirritja, who are known for higher, shorter instruments) like in a yidaki, and learn how to play on a yidaki that Yolngu like, this is a rare opportunity.

This is the heaviest and most dramatic of the recent batch from Mirrwatnga. Raw, dirty traditional sound. Very big and full drone pitch, clear but without bright upper harmonics. The powerful player will really make this instrument sing impressively.

Mirrwatnga Munyarryun

Basic Drone E
Horn tone G
Length 138.5cm
Mouth 3.2cm

Base end 12.5cm
Weight 4kg

A muted, dirty sounding instrument most likely not suited to the tastes of many contemporary players, but one that Mirrwatnga enjoys and plays very well. Very strong midrange frequencies. The artwork, small animal designs and cross-hatch, is very fine.

Basic Drone F
Horn tone F#
Length 131cm
Mouth 4cm

Base end 10.5cm
Weight 4kg

A full and warm sounding yidaki that responds very well to traditional styles, but has a mouthpiece that is likely too big for most non-Yolngu players. It is however very responsive and would sing with the right player as is, or with an added mouthpiece.

An extremely full sounding instrument with solid bass and good higher harmonics. Easily achieved horn tone, in a relationship to the drone that is very popular in Arnhem Land. This was Mirrwatnga's favorite of the batch it came in with.
