This Yidaki was crafted by Gurraramawuy Munyarryun and has been painted by Boliny Wanambi of the Marrakulu clan, in earth pigments (ochres and clay). This painting depicts a honey bee story, as the bees are entering their nest in the stringybark forest at Yanawal, Marrakulu country inland from Gurka'wuy, or Trial Bay. Patterns denote this country and the various states of flowering stringybark. All of this relates to the powerful Dhuwa moiety ancestor Wuyal, the honey/sugarbag hunter. This is a very raw sounding instrument - dirty and muted as opposed to bright and harmonic. The horn tone is easy to play and well-matched with the drone.
