Newsflash - 11 August 2006 Manggalili clan leader Baluka Maymuru won the 2006 Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Awards' Wandjuk Marika 3D Memorial Award with the set of three larrakitj seen at left. He is shown below giving his acceptance speech. At his right is his cousin Mawalan Marika, son of Wandjuk and presenter of the award, and on his left is his sister Naminapu Maymuru-White, coincidentally the 2005 winner of the same award.  Baluka's award winning set and the rest of the winners and other entries, including six more from Yirrkala Arts, are on display at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory in Darwin until 21 October. |
