Welcome to The Mulka Project Yolngu Multimedia Archive & Production Centre Employment - Empowerment - Cultural Heritage
The Mulka Project provides meaningful employment and empowerment to the Yirrkala community by allowing Yolngu Aboriginal People to take control of documents of their culture in modern digital media. On one side is the repatriation of valuable documentation of the region's cultural heritage that is kept in outside collections. The other is training Yolngu to take the reigns of modern media to tell their own stories from now on. We are currently dependent on government and philanthropic funding, but are developing products and services to make ourselves more sustainable into the future. Take a look around this website to get to know who we are and what projects, partnerships and opportunities we have going on.
One year after our launch in August 2007, we are pleased to announce our first publication, a DVD of twelve short films produced at the Mulka Project. It includes everything from the work of secondary students in our training programs to an ambitious film directed by outstation elders and the video portion of Nyapanyapa Yunupingu's Wandjuk Marika Memorial 3D award winning installation from the 2008 Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Awards. Soundtracks range from 1952 field recordings to new hip hop. We'd be remiss if we didn't mention that it concludes with scenes from the Chooky Dancers' visit to Yirrkala, including their infamous Yolngu Zorba.
The DVD is now available alongside other DVDs and CDs from Arnhem Land in our Online Store.
The short film at left which opens the DVD tells you a bit more about the Mulka Project.
